2012 Florida Postharvest Horticulture Tour
Coordinated by Dr. Steven Sargent, Professor of Postharvest Technology, University of Florida, Horticulture Sciences Department
March 5th through 9th
The 23rd annual Florida Postharvest Horticulture Tour will provide an opportunity to experience first-hand the latest technologies for harvest, handling and shipping of subtropical and tropical fruits, warm and cool season vegetables and ornamental crops. It is designed for produce industry professionals, educators, researchers and students in such diverse areas as field and packinghouse management, wholesale and retail sales, and import/export. We will visit large and small-scale operations, compare cooling technologies, visit a fresh-cut processor and a major supermarket distribution center.
Preliminary Itinerary
March 5th - Depart Gainesville and visit harvest operations in central and southeast Florida
March 6th - Belle Glade: fruit and vegetable harvest, handling, packing and cooling
March 7th - Homestead: fruit and vegetable harvest, handling, packing and cooling
March 8th - Immokalee area: fresh-cut processor, produce distribution warehouse
March 9th - Central Florida: fresh-cut processor, produce distribution warehouse
